Firstly, remember!… kayak fishing is a physical sport (at times quite demanding). You need to be relatively fit and healthy to safely practice and enjoy this sport.

The following guidelines are for your safety and should be adhered to:

  1. Wear a PFD at all times
    • Make sure your PFD is comfortable and you’ll be able to self rescue with it.
  2. Your Kayak must be over 3 metres in length to go to sea (beyond the backline) and at least have a rudder to control your steering. Preferably over 4m.
  3. Your Kayak must have minimum 30% buoyancy
    • Important to note, the 30% Buoyancy is for the vessel and not to keep you afloat on the vessel. This makes it possible for the vessel to be recovered.
  4. You have to carry a 10 metre rope. (tow rope)
  5. You have to carry an anchor with at least 60m anchor line. This is critical for windy days where wind pushes you out to sea!
  6. You have to carry Pencil flares (not out of date)
  7. Always have Bailing device (bucket or collapsible bucket) You can use your tackle box or a sponge
  8. You must have 750ml drinking water as a minimum. Preferably some snacks as well.
  9. Paddle leash – Attach your paddle to your ski via a leash (for safety detach during surf launching and beaching)
  10. Use SafeTRX (https://www.nsri.org.za/water-safety/safetrx/) This is the NSRI rescue app that tracks your activity. There is a panic button that will deploy NRSI units to your location immediately.
  11. Kayak should display identification, if your Kayak is found out at sea NSRI or anyone who finds it will have your details. We recommend you join a SAKFA associated club like wckac.co.za
  12. Carry a cell phone in a waterproof pouch programme in 082 911 SEA RESCUE
  13. SMS/Whatsapp your launch and return time or leave a float plan with someone
  14. Never paddle alone, always buddy up with at least one person. Join a club or whatsapp group if you don’t have kayak buddies.
  15. Always respect nature – check the weather forecast before you leave and keep checking when you are out at sea
  16. Make sure you are able to turn over and climb on your Kayak if it capsizes
  17. If your Kayak capsizes stay with it and phone for help
  18. Check your Kayak before leaving for cracks and leaks. Make sure the bungs are in!
  19. Remember – know your own personal paddling capabilities and do not exceed them
  20. Conform to any MPA zone’s and restrictions
  21. A plastic whistle is also handy to have to attract attention
  22. A mirror to use for attracting attention (using suns reflection)

Nutrition, What & Why?

Important thing is that you do take note that you always have to pack something to eat and drink. Conditions could turn no matter where you launch and you could need some refreshments. Water is critical, make sure you always pack water. To eat, really is up to you. This is a very social sport so...
